A Perpetually Dissolving Fairytale

This last leg wasn’t easy. Initially, it was supposed to snow for a day and then warm back up to 80. Then it changed to bad weather for a week before warming back up. At this point, we’ve come to accept that it probably won’t warm back up, and summer is firmly behind us.

We spent two separate days huddled in our tent while a storm raged outside. The days we did hike, it was through a snowy landscape. Most mornings we’d emerge to find a freshly snow-covered landscape, the trees looking like something out of a fairytale. But as the day wore on, the snow would drip drip away. It was like hiking in a perpetually dissolving fairytale.

We ended up going back down to lower elevation for some roadwalking to escape the bitter cold and foot-deep snow where we’d only make 5 miles by lunch. After resupplying in Lincoln, we’re headed for some more road walking since there are still a bunch of trail closures ahead. We’re getting close to the end, though, which is pretty exciting. Just two more weeks!

    1. Snow is definitely not my fav for hiking, but at least it’s beautiful. And we’re so close to finishing!

  1. So crazy to think how close to the end you are. How does it feel knowing how far you’ve both come. I’d love to hear what memory sticks with you both the most out of this all.

    1. Walking every day has become so normal that most of the time it seems just, well, normal. I’m not sure it’s sunk in yet that we’re almost finished.

Britta says that the memories that have stuck with her most are how friendly everyone has been, and also how much she thinks about food every day. For me, I’m not sure if there’s just one moment. There are so many – of gorgeous landscapes, amazing people, and all the challenges the trail has thrown at us. I think one of my fav memories is reaching Pie Town in NM (after running out of food on the Gila River) and discovering the Toaster House. It’s a magical place.
