Change of Plans: the Grand Enchantment Trail

While my original hiking plan for the summer was the Pacific Crest Trail, I’ve decided instead to thru-hike the Grand Enchantment Trail (aka the GET). This means I can have a slightly more relaxed pace and not worry about reaching Canada before winter. I can enjoy gorgeous desert stars and warm sun instead of dealing with lots of snowy mountains. And more importantly for me at the moment: I’ll get to enjoy everything I love about thru-hiking without being gone from the other parts of my life for a full half year.

The GET is a 770+ mile route conceived by hiker Brett Tucker through Arizona and New Mexico, and, probably as a result of being newer, the GET is not as popular yet as a trail like the PCT. (If you’re interested in learning more, the GET website is here.) I’m expecting more solitude, a more adventurous navigation challenge, and a totally different experience than my CDT thru-hike.

I’ll be on the trail in just a short while, and can’t wait to share it with you!

  1. Same! I’m excited to see, through your images and words, all of these unique and interesting desert environments. It’s so different than the swaths of green we have on the coast. Thanks for making us a part of your adventure, even if it’s vicariously.

    1. The fact that it’s such a different experience than West Coast hiking might be why I love the desert so much. Thanks for following along!
