By the Numbers: Wyoming

We’ve now walked across three states, and suddenly we’re thinking about the end of our entire hike and not just the end of the next section.

In Island Park, ID, we picked up a box from home with snacks (thanks Mom) and solar glasses (thanks Dad) just in time to watch the solar eclipse, which was super cool. We were close enough to the path of totality that we got a minute or two of dusk-like darkness.

After Island Park, our next stop to resupply was Lima. The only way into Lima was via Interstate, and initially Britta and I weren’t very hopeful. But we ended up getting a hitch quite quickly with a lovely couple from Canada – thanks David and Petra!

Here are a few numbers to sum up Wyoming, followed by some random pics from the state:

  • 1 more state completed
  • 2 zero days (+10 days off trail to go to our older sister’s wedding)
  • 4 resupplies in “towns”
  • 28 miles was the most walked in one day
  • 29 days in Wyoming
  • 508 miles total
One of our tent poles randomly snapped just before Yellowstone. In Britta’s words, “Duct tape can’t fix everything.” We’re still able to set the tent up, it’s just a bit… lopsided.
A double rainbow after a storm in the Great Basin.
We camped a night at the Parting of the Waters, where a river splits in two. One side (the left side in this pic) ends up in the Atlantic ocean, the other in the Pacific.

  1. When we saw two girls hitch hiking in the middle of no-where on the Monida pass near the border of Idaho and Montana we had to stop just to see what they were doing. We coud tell that they wer special, but we never imagined that they had been trekking along the Continental Divide all the way from Mexico. We were so thrilled to meet them and to hear their story. We ar hoping to see them again when they reach the end of the trail in Waterton National Park in Alberta, Canada

    1. Thanks again for the ride – we really appreciated it!! We’re definitely looking forward to reaching Canada; now that we’re in Montana it feels like the home stretch. Just a few more weeks!
