By the Numbers: New Mexico

We did it! One entire state is now behind us. I’d say that crossing from New Mexico into Colorado was exciting or profound, but the truth was that we crossed around 7am and it was freezing cold and the snow in front of us looked the same as the snow in back.

Because I’m a numbers sort of person, here are a few to sum up the hike so far.

1 state completed
3 zero days
9 stops or towns
12 days hiking in the snow
Dozens of types of animals encountered (including elk, deer, bear, javalinas, groundhog, coyotes, rabbits, a timber wolf, wild turkeys, snakes, hawks, herons, owls, kingfisher, grouse, tarantulas, lizards)
53 days total
Over 200 river crossings
680 miles walked

I’ll get a post about our first few days in Colorado up soon, but in the meantime, here are some random pictures from the last bit of New Mexico.

Britta crosses a wide, overflowing river via a fallen log. The log was a few yards short, so at the end she made a giant leap to a clump of willows near the bank.
That log Britta successfully crossed? The end broke off as I was preparing to make the jump, plunging me chest deep into the water. This was my post-plunge face. Such fun.
Britta hikes through the falling snow.
Oh look, it’s the tip of a trail marker that hasn’t been buried completely. Yay!
