By the Numbers: Colorado

We made it to Wyoming! Getting out of Colorado provided a huge boost in morale for me – no more snow and towering mountains for awhile.

Someone had marked the border on the trail using rocks.
Can you tell I’m excited?

Despite the long, 10 day stretch of trail, this last section went by surprisingly quickly. The terrain changed quite abruptly from forested mountains to gently rolling desert about a day into Wyoming. We made good time the last few days into Rawlins, WY, with daily mileage in the lower 20’s.

We’re definitely back in the desert. This photo was taken around 8 pm, and it was just starting to cool down.

Like I did with New Mexico, here are a few numbers to sum up Colorado:

  • 1 more state completed
  • 1 night spent indoors
  • 2 miles was the maximum we got off trail
  • 4 zero days
  • 6 towns + Platoro
  • 17 days spent walking mostly in the snow (although there were plenty more days where there was just a bit of snow)
  • 25 miles was the highest mileage walked in a day
  • 52 days total
  • 631 miles of trail

Britta and I are taking a vacation from the trail to attend our older sister’s wedding, and will return to Rawlins and the trail in a week and a half. Our Dad and brother are picking us up today (thanks guys!), and I have to say, it’s going to be both strange and relaxing to not be hiking every day. I’m looking forward to the break, though!

  1. First off, I’d like to congratulate you two on your illustrious journey of enlightenment. However, I am slightly perturbed by your atrocious spelling of “milage.” Please consider this a friendly reminder to use grammar your parents would approve of.

  2. Another state already! You guys are kicking some serious butt and I’m excited to see how far you’ve made it! Enjoy the break and we’ll ‘see’ you again soon.

    1. We’re excited as well to be over halfway now! We made it 100 miles into Wyoming before we left, and I have a feeling that the rest will fly by.
